Building a Second Brain by Tiago Forte

What brings me to this book?

I like to read books, but I often forgot what I read. This needs to be fixed. My hypothesis is I do not synthesize what I went through and knowledge is not internalized. To internalized knowledge, I need to be able to articulate what I read in my own words. Which leads me to researching on note taking.

The biggest takeaway for me is PARA and CODE.

PARA talks about how to organize notes. This is new to me. Organizing notes on actionability rather than categories. PARA stands for Projects, Areas, Resources and Archives. The idea is first to make organizing as simple as possible, and keep the most active tasks closest to my attention. I can see that would work as I got distracted so easily and lost track of what I am currently spending time on. Keeping the folders simple and relatively flat makes it manageable in the long run.

CODE talks about being conscious on the process of note taking itself. Being clear on different stages of the process allow us to segregate and contain our fear of messing up. It is to me a part of divide and conquer in algorithms. CODE stands for Capture, Organize, Distill and Express. I really like how Tiago emphasize on separation of concern between capturing and managing the notes. Let's not burden our brain on constant context switching between what to keep and how to manage.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to be anchored within the storms of digital information assault to our life.
